Bathery Jain Temple
Located at Kidanganad, Sultan Bathery is one of the most popular Jain temple in Kerala. It is believed to have been built during the 13th century. Its design is strongly influenced by the architectural style of the then reigning Vijayanagar Dynasty. It is built with massive granite pillars with beautiful carvings, and is well-known for its amazing architecture and charming sculptures.
Now this temple is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. Another unique feature is the history of the temple which was at first used as a shrine, then as a centre of commercial trade and finally, as the ammunition store or battery of Tipu Sultan’s army. Since Tipu Sultan used this temple as a battery, the town got its name Sultan Bathery.
